Late afternoon/early evening open thread

What you missed on Sunday Kos ....

  • In An Overview of the New Senate Health Bill mcjoan outlined the good, the bad and the confusing in the current Senate health care bill, complete with manager's amendment. A good resource/primer post to come back to as we move ahead this week toward passage.
  • In Phantom Hope: The Afghan Army, Meteor Blades weighed both current evidence and historical precedent to come to the sad conclusion that training the Afghan Army up to the point where it would be capable of  taking command over the country's national security simply isn't going to happen.
  • In Looking for a New START, Plutonium Page reviewed the problems of agreement about verification protocol that seem to be one of the major hang-ups in negotiating a new START treaty between Russia and the U.S. She also looked at hurdles any agreement might face in the U.S. Senate.
  • In Water World, DarkSyde, with help from artist Karen Werhstein, imagined in vivid and gripping detail what the atmosphere is like on the most recently discovered exosolar planet, described as "A big, fat planet-sized spinning drop of dirty boiling water thousands of miles deep over a small rocky-metal core the size of our moon."
  • In Peter Watts at US Border, DarkSyde interviewed the popular sci fi author about his recent well-publicized detention at the Canadian border.
