In the Senate, courtesy of the Office of the Majority Leader:

Convenes: 9:30am

Morning Business with senators permitted to speak for up to 10 minutes each.

It is the Majority Leader's intention to turn to the consideration of the Consolidated Appropriations bill when it is received from the House of Representatives.

So the CR has passed the House and is now in the hands of the Senate. The House moves on to the super-duper important legislation Hollywood Johnny Mac blew off Letterman for some tax extenders and renewable energy credits.

And thirty suspensions.

That's what McCain threw his ridiculous Hail Mary for. And meanwhile, even his running mate knows it's a waste of time. After all, her favorite preacher will tell you the world's economy is controlled by Jews. So, duh!

Tomorrow's still the day slated for adjournment. Which means the bailout package still has to make it through both houses. And then they have to cross their fingers that Bush doesn't go bonkers and veto. Theoretically he could, as he threatened to do with the "Protect America Act" in August of 2007, move to call Congress back into an emergency session to continue work on the bailout, should he choose to veto it. Same goes for the CR, in fact.

Of course, the Congress could just opt to adjourn without declaring it a sine die adjournment, reserving the option to come back into session if necessary. Probably the better option, actually, since Bush could take sine die adjournment as an opportunity to make recess appointments, not to mention act all "presidential" if he wants an additional session. If they're not adjourned sine die, no emergency session would be necessary, and they could reconvene without special presidential direction.

Oh, and it also would be worth considering staying technically in session in case the DC Court of Appeals ever comes back with a decision on the Miers and Bolten contempt charges. Because it might be nice to, you know, settle the question of whether or not the 111th Congress will have subpoena power.

Karl Rove and Michael Mukasey, it seems, get away with their contempt scot free as predicted. Well, so do Miers and Bolten, really.

But there will totally be oversight of the $700 billion! Boy howdy!
